Native American Gallery
American Madonna

This scratchboard piece is based on a photograph taken by Edward Curtis in 1908 of a Hidatsa Indian mother and child. The Hidatsa people were first seen by Lewis and Clark in 1804 living along the banks of the Missouri river. By the time Edward Curtis took the photograph of the Hidatsa mother the tribe had been reduced to as few as 500 people and they were living in the Fort Berthold Indian reservation in North Dakota.
